One of the great things about JCS is that custom tilesets can be made. People then went mad over them making tilesets with whatever theme they could think of. One of the most frequently asked questions is: “How do I make a tileset?” Now that question will be answered.
STEP ONE
The first thing to do is make an image for a tileset to be drawn upon. The image must be 320 pixels wide and multiple of 32 pixels high. One tile is 32×32 pixels. A tileset can have up to 1023 tiles (4096 in TSF). To make it easier, a tileset image should have a grid. The background colour must be #5700CB#. A palette has to be made for the tileset as well. If you don’t want to make a grid and a palette yourself, download this: http://www.savefile.com/files/162533
STEP TWO
Now that you have got the image, it is time to get drawing! Load up the image in your drawing program (I recommend Photoshop), and draw your tiles. Remember to spend time on it, don’t rush it. DO NOT DRAW OVER THE TOP LEFT TILE! Once you have drawn your tiles, erase the remaining grid, and save the image in the Tiles folder. Now you are ready for the next step.
STEP THREE
The next thing to do is the mask. The mask is everything which is solid in the tileset. The solid parts are everything Jazz cannot walk through. To make the mask, simply erase everything which is not solid, or unmasked. Once you’ve done that, save it as a different file to the orignall tileset drawing. Now you are ready for…
STEP FOUR
Now its time to compile your tileset. To make it usable in JCS, open JCS up and click on set. Then click add, and enter the details. Since the image you downloaded used the Jazz 2 palette, don’t check the remap tileset palette option. Click ok, then Build. Your tileset is now ready to use!!
STEP FIVE (OPTIONAL)
Now have built your set, its time to upload it onto Jazz 2 online. Don’t forget to make an example level for your tileset. Also, try to find some good music to go with your set.
