Some time ago, DoubleGJ and myself (ThunderPX) decided we would interview each other about our current projects and what we have planned for the future. So, without further ado, here is the interview with DoubleGJ, creator of Devil Dash and Guilty Gene.
ThunderPX: So… first question. Are you still working on Devil Dash?
DoubleGJ: The answer is yes… and no. Technically, I\‘m not working on it, but I\‘m planning to continue it and eventually finish after I\‘ve passed high school. This means I will come back to work on it this June. There\‘s very little to do in order to complete the first episode, but this part requires the most creativity. More interestingly, all of this is the very beginning of the episode. Even the outro is long-done.
Thunder: Ah… so which part are you working on, that it needs so much creativity?
2xGJ: The first level is a great example. It will feature a new tileset that is supposed to be the actual Carrotus Castle, unlike the official Castle tileset which is just its dungeon. The gameplay will be similar to standard Jazz2 levels, meaning just running and jumping around shooting enemies and collecting goodies, but at the same time it will attemp to create a logical construction of the castle only partially altered by Bubba’s visit. Also, the storyline will be complex, but it won’t make the gameplay lose its dynamics.
Thunder: Ah… that was the level you posted a screenshot of way back on the JCF, right?
(Said screenshot can be found here: http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5554/someddscreenie11kf.jpg )
2xGJ: The screenshot was taken from a level I use to test the tileset. The level will be built once the tileset is finished, but I have plans ready. It’s well thought-out. Only two other levels of episode 1 have their maps on paper, simply because I have started using this concept only recently. It’s easy to tell which levels are newer and which are older.
Thunder: I see. You must be quite busy having to do all that. Does that impact other projects, like Guilty Gene?
(Guilty Gene being DoubleGJ’s comic, detailing the creation of the Dark Jazz boss in JJ1’s episode six. The comic can be viewed at http://www.jsz-jazz.deviantart.com/ )
2xGJ: Guilty Gene has become my main project ever since I came up with it. I’ve put a lot of effort in Devil Dash, but Guilty Gene is simply closer to my heart, from the way it’s done to the very details of its storyline. It’s more than possible that Devil Dash episode 1 could’ve been done months ago if it wasn’t for Guilty Gene taking up its place. But nothing’s lost in the end, as both projects are connected with each other, whether it be storyline, characters, or even the author’s touch (hehe).
Thunder: So are you working on anything else in particular, other than those two projects?
2xGJ: I have few… things on mind, but they’re all just waiting in the lobby of my brain. I don’t want to work on too many things at once, since that way anyone who would be interested in only one of them would have to wait definately too long. So far the only one of these projects that ever got mentioned in public is Metroid X, a comic continuing the storyline of Metroid Fusion right where it left off in the outro.
Thunder: So do you have any idea what kind of job you want after you finish school?
2xGJ: The conclusion is pretty obvious – comic artist. But thinking more realistic, I believe I will either work on advertisement designs or graphical designs for computer games and/or other software, since that satisfies me too. There’s also the option of trying myself in the music industry but I doubt it’ll seriously work out.
Thunder: So if you’d go into the music industry, would you go solo or in a band?
2xGJ: I’m not certain about that. Right now what I come up with when composing has generally a full band sound to it and I do have a band, but it’s incomplete and rahter unorganised. Basically, it all depends on the band’s future – if we manage to gather a full complet and practice more often, we could try to get in as a whole, or if we don’t, I won’t hesistate to try to do some electronical music on my own. After all, Nine Inch Nails started as one person doing rock-sounding electronical music and it stayed like that for quite long, so why couldn’t it work again?
And finally, even if I won’t manage to make any money from it, I still won’t stop doing music. There’s always the tracker scene and game remixes where I feel at home aswell.
Thunder: I guess something wouldn’t be right if you only did it if you got money from it =P Anyway, that’s about all the questions I have, so thanks for your time.
2xGJ: yay thx gg no re =D

I forgot a bit of the interview. I accidentally left out the answer to the first question and the second question, but since they\‘re both about Devil Dash I guess it\‘s not that noticable. Should\‘ve been like this:

DoubleGJ: The answer is yes… and no. Technically, I\‘m not working on it, but I\‘m planning to continue it and eventually finish after I\‘ve passed high school. And so on.
