I thought Desert Forces was Unhit’s first tileset? Oh well, nm. Let’s get on with the review:
New Castle is quite a neat although small tileset by Unhit. I’m gonna write the review in different sections to make it easier for you to read and understand it.
The background is beautifully textured and is also very detailed. There are also other background tiles like the rain which is quite ugly and simple but it works. And also the white stone walls. ?! Heard that?! White, my favourite colour!! :-D (OK, I admit, the white walls aren’t completely white, some areas are kinda grey. Happy now? :-P) Alright…er…because the background tiles are so great (and HUGE) I’ll guess I have to give an whole 3.5+ for that.
The animations are quite good too and I couldn’t see anything wrong with them. Unfortunately, there are only animations of burning candles or whatever and it would be good if there was more. You could for example make the eyes of the rabbits in the paintings move to give ppl the feeling the castle is haunted. Well, since there is nothing wrong with the animations, I’ll give them an 1.5. Good job.
Now on to the basic blocks. There are many (if not all) basic blox here. The vines, spikes, poles, destruct and buttstomp blocks and also (obviously) walking blox. There’s not much to say really, almost everthing is here. Nice on Unhit. 1.5+ for these stuff. :-)
The eyecandy, however isn’t exactly New Castle’s strongest point. It has got the beautiful background and the rain but there are also some paintings of Jazz, Spaz and Lori to put in the walls. And also, to make the “I’m in an oldy old castle” feeling better, Unhit has put some windows, some swords and spears in too. However, I would prefer some knights with armour and maybe some bows? That would look much better. After all, it is a castle. Then there are also..ehm…lots of other castle stuff I’m too lazy to talk about. Well, anyway. The eyecandy is OK. But I’ll only give it an 0.2 cause there isn’t much originality.
And here comes the last section: Usefulness and ease of use. Well, let’s put it this way: the tileset doesn’t look much like a castle at all even though I know Unhit tried his best. I mean, where the heck is the battlements? (Towers) And the drawbridges? And the knights in shining armour? And the great big walls? The tileset looks quite like some kind of monastery rather than a castle. But perhaps it doesn’t matter much cause I’ve seen the tileset and it looks very easy to use. (That’s definitively good news for newbies. :-)
Now, for the final rating…6.7! Not exactly an GREAT rating but I think New Castle deserves it. However, even though the rating isn’t that good, I recommend you to download this tileset cause…er…cause I said so. :-P
Cheers,
White Rabbit.
