And yet there have been nine downloads that were neither the uploader nor Grytolle, so there must be at least some demand. :-?
i’ve just finished it. it’s epic, also with those really old tilesets! it has the oldschool atmosphere like the in the original game. the eyecandy was all okey, everything were placed good. it could be a little harder, mainly the boss battle.. i liked the secrets really, btw the bonus level could be more creative and longer but that was good also (: i found everything, i think, but i enjoyed looking for the coins (:
thank you, great work!
Considering how both of those are listed at the top of this page I question the usefulness of this upload…
Violet: How about we talk about demand when there are 1000 downloads and not 9.
Inconsistent difficulty with most of the levels. I aced most of the test, but the last level was a pain in the ().
I think the eye-candy is slightly distracting. I’m not dissing the “rainbow” concept though; it doesn’t lend itself to the game-type very well in my opinion.
The version of top secret 3 you didn’t include is Gus’, not Overlord’s default top3 that’s supposedly “in everyone’s cache or jj2 folder”.
Despite all of the negative points, it’s still a reasonably difficult test to…maybe…play on a rainy day?
No rating. I just wanted to comment.
I have a weird problem with this program: It runs flawlessly on a desktop computer running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit, and yet a Dell Latitude D830 laptop running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit cannot run it at all.
I honestly have no idea why one computer accepts it without complaining at all and the other arbitrarily decides to reject it outright.
What the hell is going on?
BTW: I have followed the instructions perfectly and in exactly the same manner on both computers, and I have played the same songs in both cases, from the same directory and path, under the same compatibility settings.
this level is amazing and very creative . we need more from this kind :D it was fun to explore, it wasn’t so hard and the water-level changes were very nice :D the eyecandy was well made, the level design also. it is almost my favourite level now thank you ((:
tileset is simple, but nice i like it (: the example levels were not so hard, there were lots of paths to go on, all in all they were also okey. i like the part where to snow was switched into green landscape, maybe i’ll use this tileset one day for a level, with these changing of tiles.i didn’t play the battle level, but the single player was good for me, maybe it was a bit linear, but this is because the plainment of the tileset. the background with the sinking ice was also nice. i’ll give it a 7 rating and a download recommendation.
this mappack is perfect, a masterpiece ((: i really enjoyed getting all coins, mostly on the wasteland. i got all, but they wer well placed. this is how jj2 levels should look like :D could be harder but i’ll give it maximum rating.

the tileset looks good and the level was nice to play. its favourite moment was the dark part :P the eyecandy was good looking and the whole set’s ancient style was appealing. i’m waiting for the second map to finish :DD

first start with the bad things. there are loads of tilebugs in this level, and a sky is also badly made. the map is quite long but next time don’t put too much goodies and ammo. you also have to make the geometry more complex and improve the eyecandy. and lol always use english texts!
by the way the idea of this carrot jungle was ok for me. i know you can make it better. it was fun to play even it was a bit linear (: i gave it 4 points and i recommended it to try.
But you can do better!
I had some trouble with reviewing this one. Though it’s two years old at this point, I’ve never really played any serious games in it (and I certainly don’t remember testing it, unlike the credits field says?), and every time it appeared in a JDC event, I never lasted more than a couple minutes because an RF would usually explode in my face. But seeing how this does get played every now and then (and nobody complains about it ever!), there’s no reason to assume it’s broken, so I decided to just give this a run in LAN mode and say what I like about this and what I don’t.
While obviously SJ put effort into the visuals, as the tileset’s creator I’m biased here. The eyecandy is largely a mix of organized and unorganized, some places have so much detail that they look busy (especially when exposed to the intricate background) while some have big swathes of gradients or black backgrounds. Some things feel repetitive, and some look rather tacky, like the animated lights, or the dust(?) at the sides.
Also, while WTF is pretty much a “do whatever you want” type of tileset, some things bother me because they were never meant to go together: the green [X] tiles don’t look good when combined with the brown stone tiles! It feels like SJ used the tileset as if was a nature set, which gives a rather strange result. The only thing I can compare this to is Atom Heart 243.5, which is another SJ level which I didn’t find too good looking. Maybe SJ should just keep using nature sets? I definitely prefer SJ’s nature levels to SJ’s tech levels.
Xyzzy has a rather impressive size of 200×70, though it uses it space differently than other large levels – the layout is a standard three floor fare, and the corridors are spacious and open. Still, it’s not suited for a 3vs3 or anything of that size (a quick check reveals that this level was played in a whopping zero 3vs3 games in the past three JDC seasons). RFs and Seekers will largely dominate this level, and we all know how that ends :P. And while it’s not as enclosed as Sanguinary Sanctuary, the route from base to base takes longer in this level somehow. The bottom path helps a bit (it puzzles me why wasn’t it there from the beginning) but I’m not sure if the wind events were all that necessary.
To sum it up, this is a good level objectively speaking, but I can’t really enjoy it for a bunch of reasons? To quote the legendary Trafton’s reviews on Atom Heart:
a fundamentally good level tinkered with until it just doesn’t quite “work.” That isn’t to say that it is a bad level.
My rating may seem low, but that’s simply because there’s no way to give a 7.99 rating. Please make more levels like Conflux and Mt. Helens SJ! ;)
Funnily enough, until writing this review I haven’t realised that this is SuperJazz’s first Battle upload since a year and a half – apparently I wasn’t the only JCSer to take a small break in 2010. :P While 4th Reich was a good level (even if the name raises an eyebrow or two) I wasn’t really the biggest fan of it, even if it did use my tileset rather well.
Conflux, however, is an improvement from 4th Reich in pretty much every aspect. The theme, which is that of a “freak magical accident” is strong through and through, with multiple “elements” mixing smoothly but never really clashing with eachother. I think SJ could have done some more mixing, though, because as it is, the level is pretty much split into a Castle section, a Diamondus section, a Hocus section, etc. The spectacular background offers a glimpse of what could have been if SJ gave himself more freedom ;) The music fits the level (or should I say, the level fits the music?), but after it loops once or twice, even the biggest HoMM 3 fan will be a little sick of it.
This is a big level. The size is 140×80, but it’s more open and straightforward than E. Prime, which is 140×90 but doesn’t feel as big as Conflux does. For the most part, the gameplay is exactly what you’d expect from a well designed battle level – it flows well, it’s fast, plenty of carrots and powerups, etc. There’s a number of twists on the formula though, and one of them is the Bouncer powerup – you need a Sugar Rush to get it (inspired by Rainforest Revelry perhaps?). With the Bouncer PU, you can now shoot the previously buttstomp-only Fire Shield. It’s a cool sidequest, even if not very practical in the long run: the freely available RF powerup will be a better weapon than Bouncers, and the shield isn’t a very big deal, considering the bottom 25% of the level is underwater. Two of the five carrots are located there, by the way, and I don’t like the bottom left carrot – it’s hidden, it’s easily campable, and the area it’s placed in is boring.
Other than that, everything else in the level really clicks together, and the other small gimmicks (there’s a hidden warp, the Toaster PU which is a bit tricky to sidekick, the hard-to-reach carrot) are amusing and you can tell that this level was polished a lot. My favorite part is how the Castle part closely follows the mannerisms of other battle levels using Castle (namely battle1), but doesn’t rip them straight. I had fun playing this in this year’s bash and in various JDC 20 events. This is SJ’s best battle effort yet and it shows!
By the way, If you have used the leaked version you’ll have to set your settings on this version and press “Save settings manually” under the settings menu.
of course i used your tileset, it has a very good atmosphere. thanks for TreyLina for the review, i tried to correct some mistakes i have made in the map. now it has to work in 1.23 also. give it a try :)
Thank you for using my stuff! {:-D
If you made it in TSF JCS, it only works in TSF. However, there is a TSF to 1.23 level converter out there by ZapS I think. Levels that run in 1.23 work in TSF as well, of course. EDIT: Like I said, 1.23 levels will work on TSF as well. I know that because I have done it before many times.
Well, I decided to try this level out…
Gameplay
I played this on hard mode. It was rather cheap a few times, with the hidden bats, although there wasn’t much and the large rows of multiply enemies weren’t really necessary. Overall the enemy placement was decent though. But the confusing EC did ruin the gameplay a bit, it is really misleading when you play the level for the first time. Not good. It would be nice if there was a wider selection of ammo, too.
The level is pretty linear, you will always follow the same path, but you can try and uncover the secret paths to get the coins. I didn’t bother getting them all though, so I don’t know what the reward is. I thought that if you didn’t manage to get across the vines of the level, it would take you to a somewhat long but rewarding path which was an actual cave. But all it did was take me back up to try again. Not even any rewards. Dissapointing.
While you can play with all characters, it’s not really balanced. Spaz is going to stuggle to get across the vine part of the level, and there’s not any exclusive rewards for him. There isn’t really any character exclusive rewards/parts at all, so that decreases the replay value more (for me, at least). There’s a part where Jazz/Lori will struggle to get up from a bit, from a small platform to a bridge if you want to reach the coin across. I don’t find the struggling type of balance very fun, though.
Eyecandy
Ugh…like I said before, confusing for when you play the map for the first time. Like you think some areas are solid, but they’re not. There are also quite a noticable amount of tilebugs. I found a missing tile and cut-off ends of eyecandy.
The background was okay, although I think it needs a bit more life to it. Maybe the sky could move slowly. It’s not very forest-like either. Sure, there are some trees, but not much within the foreground.
Music
It’s pretty cool, but it doesn’t set the feeling or atmosphere of the level.
I think you could have potential with single player levels, if you keep the advice in mind. If you want to play this level, prepare to be misled by bad (confusing) EC placements. It’s not terrible, but it can be annoying at times. Thus, try if you really want to.
EDIT: Well, after the update I played it again. There’s still some tilebugs and misleading eyecandy, and the new music choice doesn’t really fit that much either, although it’s a bit more appropiate than last time. There’s also a blaster pu down the vine area, I wasn’t really thinking of that kind of reward though…but whatever. I noticed a few other minor changes too, such as some other ammo. Not a huge improvement, but better than nothing.
thanks for this tileset i used it for my level and gave credits to you :)
[Review changed to quick review, see the review rules. ~cooba]
it is a very original looking tileset which have almost everything a normal tileset has,it is very useful
thanks for this good tileset my next level will use this conversion ^^
