I quite liked this set, and thought that I’d do a full review for it.

First off, and probably most important, graphics. While a few people are saying the set looks too much like Traditional Japan, I like the cartoony style and don’t have any problems with it. The tiles don’t look grainy or poor quality, the animations are quite smooth, and overall the set has a nice feel to it. Also, the background looks great.

Next comes usability. The tiles are quite well organized, and it’s pretty simple to see how they link together. However, the set seems to rely quite a bit on using layer 5. A tree, for example, has a masked section in the middle of it, and if you want to have the whole tree unmasked (like in the example level) you have to put the tile in layer 5. Other things like having icicles transparent need layer five as well. The snow event doesn’t really work, so animated tiles are included instead. Poles and trees don’t work, though the pinball events do.

After that, there are a few other issues. The background seems empty, as one layer is used for the coastline and the other for clouds. The masking, which is better than some sets, is still inconsistent in some areas, like vines and hooks. A few tiles are from Traditional Japan, and the textured background is the generic carrotus one. The tileset still has some good extras though, like the falling icicles.

Overall, I’d give this set an 8.5 and a download recommendation.

Tried using the set. It really is a pain to use, for it is so incredibly lacking in necessary tiles. I’m pretty sure every level made with this set will look exactly the same. It’s a shame, since the set at least looks nice.

Thanks for pointing out the tilebug. It’s fixed now.

Also, you can easily shoot down the fly carrot with powered bouncers. Don’t use the small gap, just walk right up to the edge of the pit and shoot.

KiMO: You’re right that the carrot is risky, but luck has almost nothing to do with it, at least not in a serious duel. If you can time when the carrot respawns, and have been tracking your opponent, you’ll have enough time to get the carrot. The is especially true if you know how to RF jump, or if you’re skilled enough to shoot down the full nrg and catch it when it’s falling (this is the quickest way to get it). Luck is only a factor if you are lagging, playing in a large game, or aren’t paying attention.

Hi. I have finally found something interesting
Mines Of Diamondus by ThunderWalker:
Now the review:

You start with Jazz/Spaz/LOri and you get to the first text
(which you could fix by the way) , and after that the show begins.

Story: Well no storyline but i won’t deduct too much out of it.

Eyecandy: The typical Diamondus tileset with 90% caves,
there weren’t too many bugs, although i have found one and after that i died because of a bat; it was covered but layer 3 contain the cave blue as well.
The layer 5 is used as well for some background cave, and layer 8 the same, layer 7and 6 with caves and holes full of leaf(or whatever that green thing is.)

Gameplay You start on a platform, it’s quite dark, there are some spikes down so be careful, there are quite a few enemies although it would be more usefull to put hurt floor instead of bees on the spikes, there are bats, hidden everywhere, carrots hidden, coins, ammo crates and barrels, there is a large variety of enemies although some only appear once or appear many in one place, there are a lot of warps, guns, food and many others.
Another thing about spikes: There are near end which is not good!
The checkpoints aren’t quite often met: I died at 1/4 of level and started from the begining, because there are only 2 checkpoints in all the level. Anyway it’s quite linear but it is a good gameplay.
And you could try putting more enemies in hard mode instead of pilling enemies on normal mode. It’s quite hard.

Ammo placement: As i said before there are all weapons, although i just wonder what’s with the electro gun?
Anyway, it’s enough for the entire level, but sometime i just felt like: why don’t just use the blaster instead of all these?
fire on bees, rapiers and raven(that’s arguable).
bouncer for…. enemies..
RF for enemies or boss.
TNT for crates.
and the rest for boss, because from what’ i’ve analysed in the level, all Destruct Scenery are with Weapon 0 so you can shoot them wih anything(except freezer ammo)….

Enemy placement
There are bees on the horisontal spikes, there are bats hidden everywhere, dragons spit fire at you when “you need the most”, a lot of tough turtles, and some are just in one place or more in 1 place and appear once in the whole level.(eg: the rapiers).
The boss is the schwarzenguard; i sincerely hope nobody has 1 life right before he/she fights it. There is a “low” spike from which you can’t escape other than jjfly…
It’s a good thing the spikes before the boss stomp blocks aren’t “spiky”; no hurt event… yeey!.

The Result:
Story: None: 7.5/10
Gameplay: Good but still room for more. 8.5/10
Ammo placement: Good, there are all guns although some are useless…. 8.5/10
Enemy_place. Lots of enemies, though, the fact that there are too many is making it hard 8.5/10
Originality: Yes, original level with a cavey design. 9.3/10
Bugs: Almost none: 9/10
Miscelaneous: You could learn making some texts…. 8/10

Final mark: 7.5+8.5+8.5+8.5+9.3+9+8 / 7 => 8.3 with DR

It’s always good to see a new level by EvilMike. Well, here is one.

Eyecandy:
Good eyecandy, but because of the layer 4 eyecandy you don’t see many of the eyecandy. But the eyecandy is well made.

Layout:
Well, I saw a few tilebugs. At the right base somewhere at the tube. A diagonal tile didn’t had 2 tiles. So it didn’t fit. The layout looks good, well done.

Gameplay:
Well, shooting both c’s down isn’t very good for the gameplay. (Fly carrot and full energy.) It is only annoying for the full energy. But you made doorways to shoot the fly carrot down with boucer. That was a good idea. With the fly carrot going into the tube and there is finally a warp and you come out by the Electro PU. There are a few RF climbs and that makes the gameplay even better. This map is fun for duels, but for bigger plays I wouldn’t recommend it.

Pick-up placement:
Good, the carrots placements are good. But 3 pu’s? all of them in one line? I think that you placed them faced too eachother. But you get ammo faster. I think that you should place the RF and bounce under the bridge somewhere. And if you got the bouncer PU, you can’t shoot the fly carrot down. But 3 pu’s are good here.

Music:
Good, but it isn’t the perfect song for this level.

Final rating: 8.2.

DR: Yes, this map is sure fun for duels.

~Looney.

EDIT: I really like the gameplay, you discribed it in the same way as I did. I just did the cons of the gameplay. But it is a good map to play, this gameplay has something unique ;D.

The only thing taken from Tradotional Japan is this plant. And it’s frozen now. I dont know what is so similar to TJ, except the drawing style. I don’t see any resemblance. As sucker tubes You can use some ground tiles – You would use layer 3 anyway… There are most of those usable tiles – for hurt event, text, vines/hooks, arrows, v-pole and h-pole, collaps scenery, destruct scenery, empty masked tiles, black tiles for transparency… So i don’t know what’s this about.

———————————————————

@Obi! All of the palette events work properly! Palette for snow is done well, but we are not able to use it in multiplayer as clients. And what’s with the reliance on layer 5? That is why the gamemakers made this layeer! To put something on it.

And well. I realize that vines’ mask is bugged, and to be honest – i didn’t know how can i solve this problem. :(

Yeah, level designed for duels. Nice one, but I am not sure, maybe I am wrong, but again, fullNRG can be shooted down I think. Eyecandy is good, and RF climb .. nice idea! Well, I wlil surely pick this level in the tournament (ofc if SJ add that level to mappoll :P).

The shading could be better, some tiles look so plastic. As minmay said, the ground looks like traditional japan ripoff. There should be also more usable tiles like sucker tubes. Because of that that tileset doesn’t deserve for more like 7,5~. The ratings like 10.0 are so biased imo. And yes, the background is impressive.
