The theme and overall look of the tileset is great, although some tiles I felt could have used a little more versatility in their usage (like the background). Nonetheless, I’m very satisfied with the end result of this tileset and I am planning to (eventually) release a level with it. :P

EDIT: The temple stuff needs to be much more versatile.

This set seems to be getting two different reactions… people either like it a whole lot, or like it only a bit. I’m torn between either because this set is really something of a diamond in the rough…

The artwork is exceptional, that’s a given. There’s a massive amount of detail everywhere, which is natural for a primarily handdrawn set (kudos for making most of it in the horror that MSPaint is!). The style is very cartoony, not in the same way as JJ2 is but it doesn’t clash blatantly, or anything. It’s very colorful and vibrant, giving the tileset a properly cheerful, happy, full-of-life feel. It’s almost as if someone sparkled some beauty powder over the whole thing – I mean, how can you possibly walk next to those pretty trees or buildings and not feel even a little bit happier?

How usable is this set, though, is something of a mixed bag – it’s easy as pie to use, the mask seems to work, the somewhat messy layout I don’t mind. However… tilesets like this really make me wish that JJ2 had more than just 3 background layers – personally I’ve always wished for just one more. This is where my biggest annoyance with this tileset comes – as minmay said, it’s very reliant on layer 5. Most tilesets are, and I usually don’t care – but here it feels like a huge waste, which could have been avoided (the volcano is not going to be used too often, for example).

This is a very good tileset. Could have been a great tileset, but it’s nice to have a tileset actually released in the first place. I was going to give this an 8, but then decided to give a small bonus because it’s just so pretty and the theme hasn’t been attempted before. A pretty damn good start to 2010 if you ask me =P

Good tileset, it has 3 different backgrounds. it has HH98 mountains and the green fits good in diamondus. Only the walls are looking a little weird. it’s a good coversion and it’s worth downloading. i give it an 8.

This tileset is great, it uses 1000 tiles and that can be a small problem, because we can only use 23 animation tiles in the level. While I was working with it i was having a lot of fun.

Drawing style of this tileset is great, there’s a much ways to make good eyecandy. I don’t like that volcano for layer8, its something strange about it, I just don’t think that its good idea about background at layer 8. Other background tiles are ok. I like this pictures which I used at layer 7 at my level. Those clouds are awesome too. Waterfalls are great, everything in this tileset is great and can be useful. When you want you can of course use other tiles(As texture mode) for background than this big volcano, just like I have done. Dodges has made a rain tile too, if someone would like to use it. Animations quality is good. Those big waterfalls looks strange, but that’s not that bad. Small waterfall is better. Water blocks in this level are really good, Dodges has made a bubble animation for it. Of course some of things in levels with this tileset was impossibile to make it without using layer 5, but if Dodges would make this set with possibility to don’t use that layer, this tileset would have to work only at TSF, and that wouldn’t be so good. Masking in this tileset is good, i haven’t found any bugs in it. That’s a great tileset, and in my opinion its one of better sets for jj2. I haven’t found any bugs, everything is fine, except that volcano. So i rate it 9.5. Good Work Dodges!

(Btw, if someone would say that it’s strange that i made a review for tileset which i was making with Dodges, I will say it now, that i didn’t made that much for this set, I only made this example level and one tile which just helped Dodges to make a normal animation)

EDIT: Eh, one small thing, I have just found 2 bugs in my example level. Btw, ammo is not placed good at this level too, but it’s just an tileset example…

EDIT2:Good, you changed some things in tileset. Now I can surely change my rating to 10. Tileset is really better now, so imo rating 10 is just ideal for this tileset.

Great artwork, but the actual execution could be much better. I particularily dislike the reliance on layer 5.

There’s no Spaz problem!
Just use the bombs from one of the previous levels to destroy
ceiling.

I didn’t like the levels, so I won’t rate them.

The eyecandy is not that bad. But…

The level is too small,it can be confusing, too much open space for a level, the warps are random…

Raul,learn to review.

5.8 for now, those 0.8 is because I like the eyecandy but nothing more.

EDITS. I rated this level lower than I wanted, because I rated a worse level higher. Here you go.

To start this review, I must point out that this level is really great based on eyecandy. There is enough of it, but not too much either. Some levels do not manage to do this, as they either have too much or there is some empty space in the level’s layers. I really should’ve thought this when making that my newest level (<— shameless self-promotion).

Well, onto the detailed part.

EYECANDY :

9

As I stated above, this level has a great amount of eyecandy and it is used in that way it doesn’t look bad (like in some levels, there’s just too much of it). This is possibly the best part of the level. There’s only one point. You know those lavafalls with stalagmites/stalactites? They should be in back layers, as they affect visibility in a negative way. This deletes some points from the total score. GAMEPLAY

9

This level’s gameplay includes good flow through the level, as the powerups are scattered all around and the carrots are also separated, thus forcing everyone to move around the level to collect carrots, ammo and coins. This is definitely a great point, as it minimizes the possibility to create any campspots at all. From my quess, the only spot you could camp is under the seeker tube, so you could pick off any enemies that come through it. AMMO PLACEMENT :

9

There is just enough ammo that if you just keep moving, you will not get to shoot with blaster :P. I keep this as a positive sight of a level, enough ammo to keep the flow going without getting into a blaster fight. There is not other things to say about in this category – maybe use some innovative ways to place ammo? THEMING :

10

GREAT. The usage of “Damn + Dark” with this music made this level’s theming extremely great. All those dark backgrounds and the dark feeling in this level made this a great example of usage of these Damn+ tilesets. You didn’t even have to lower the lightning level below the normal to make it look like a dark cave. ITEMS :

8

This level has a coinwarp, what leads the player into a full carrot. This was a little bad thing, as there’s 50 coin limit and there’s only nine coins in this level. This is too tough limit just for a full carrot. You should either change the limit, add more coins or make the secret better, for instance with a full ammo stash.

TOTAL

9

This level surely deserves this 9 due to the great work I see that is put into it. There aren’t many bad things, but there are so many good things, like the stomp-forced seeker PU, removing any possible seeker flooding.

Now, I see I made this my longest review yet, and you can be happy about it. There’s over 2800 characters in it.

Make more levels like this.

Infact, these levels too bad…
Gameplay:
1 lvl:
Just run and kill enemies, make buttstomp, run left, destroy trigger crate, go right and destroy boss on the end…
2 lvl:
Oh…You need shoot two queens, run right and defeat boss…
Now lets see results:

Fun 2/10
Too boring

Ammo 0/10
No one

Enemies 3/10
Wrong placement, too much for
normal level…

Total: 1.5
Good job! (for novice xD)
