Note: This review may be rendered “obsolete” because of the time Puffie40 posted this level on J2O (in 2004).

Well, I promised Puffie40 a review for one of his levels in the Review Exchange thread, so here is my first normal review in a long time (and my second one in general.) I couldn’t get to download Ballistic Bullets (one which I wanted to review more than this level)
because -it said “No file found.”-* Sigh…
Anyways, on with the review:
Eyecandy: 1.5/3
This level has almost no eyecandy in some areas, which is kind of bad. Other areas have some eyecandy, which isn’t all that great imo, but it’s still nice.
Gameplay: 2/4
I think it’s a little bit annoying to get around, but that’s typical when you’re new to making levels like this. Some places in this level feel like this is part of a single player level. The layout seems a bit random, and in some places is really hard to get up with Jazz or Spaz. Try to be a bit more creative with the layout.
Ammo/Goodies Placement: 1.4/2
There isn’t really that much ammo, but on the other hand where there is ammo, it’s pretty nice. ;)
Originality: 0.6/1
The way you had the ammo + cake with the carrot is pretty original. Also, when you had the food with the other ammo that was pretty cool, but I recommend not having food in your MP levels because it gives the player a sugar rush which can be quite annoying to others.
Bonuses/deductions:
Good:
—Your second level. +0.4 for that.
Bad:
—You used the original Letni music. — 0.1
—Level feels more like a Single Player level in some places. — 0.2
Calculations:
1.5 + 2 + 1.4 + 0.6 + 0.4 — 0.1 — 0.2 =
(3.5) + (2.0) + 0.4 — 0.1 — 0.2 =
(5.9) — 0.3 = 5.6
Rating: 5.6
Overall, this isn’t really that good of a level, but it’s very good for your second battle level. High five!

Download Recommendation: N/A (must be 7.5+ for Yes)

**EDIT: Puffie managed to get Ballistic Bullets working again. Yay!

meh, It’s fairly short, although accurate level.

At first, I didn’t think Industrius would have been a good music for the level, but upon playing it, I thought it was a reasonably nice choice.

Crossovers can be too accurate though, and it shows in this level. The goodies are just keen candy tiles with the jazz “Consumables” over it (Powerups for books, fast fire for the raygun, Coconuts? for the lollipops)

Warping the player back to the start is a nice move (I expected hurt tiles), but it is not a big enough deterrent from keeping the player from touching the stuff. I think using the “SP CTF Death trick” would work nicely here and add more accuracy to the level, in forcing the player to restart.

There are no enemies, and I think this hurt the level a little, which origionally was full of yorps. Just using regular JJ2 enemies in good spots would make the level a bit more entertaining that just being a obstacle course.

Masking could have been done a little differently, but this is only some mild issues so I can’t complain. (The masking around the exit was cool) As for eyecandy, Commander Keen had no multi-layer EC, and it is the same here.

Overall, I feel this level needs some polishing. I would remove the Keen1 goodies from the background completely, and just use the JJ2 equivalent (Coconuts? why coconuts? Why not the wrapped mints?).

Download recommendation? The jury’s still out on that. I believe small levels like these are better “Sold” in level packs, as the levels don’t provide much entertainment value on their own. If you want to give it a try, Go ahead…

(Admin note: It’s not his tileset, so the spelling isn’t his fault.)

could be worse.

What this is
This is basically a tileset conversion containing 3 different tilesets. (Deckstar, Industrial and Muckomok) While the idea seem s good on paper, it isn’t that good.

Tiles
Well, like I said we got three different tilesets. While there is a lot of tiles to work with, lots are missing. A lot of animation aren’t here, tiles are missing from ALL the tilesets. No Jazz 1 signs and were missing the blink arrows. (there there, but not animated) We got destruct blocks, vines and that’s it. the only background to use is a little blue square of color which is pathetic and a weird space sky thing, tubes, spikes and that’s about it. Overall, this would get a 2 by itself, but because it’s three different tilesets I raise my rating.
5/10
Animations
While some of them are here, like the static tvs, a lot of animations are missing like the spinning platforms, glowing arrows, tubes, acid and much more. Too much is missing.
3/10
Colors
WAY off. Many things look like they lost a lot of color and a lot of them look MSpainty. You call this a conversion? The colors suck and some of the black wasn’t replaced.
2/10
Pallet Events
Won’t rate because they are usually forgotten. But nothing works. There’s not even a textured background!
Masking
Masking isn’t bad. there’s some things that aren’t supposed to be masked though. More straight lines could have been used. Overall, most of the mask is good.
7/10
Reusability
Great! this tileset is great for reusability as you have three different themes to chose from. GREAT!
9/10

Final Score: 26/50
Score: 5.5
Rank: D
DR? This is a hard one. This is a Farley decent tileset. but fails as a conversion. I’ll leave my rating as N/A as it’s basically a matter of opinion.

Now this is any sonic fans dream. A complete conversion of the lost Hidden Palace Zone. How does it stack up?

Tiles
My god. My **** god. This is great! i have played through Hidden Palace Zone before and EVERYTHING is here! the flashing bridge, tubes, Master emerald, background, and all the blinking lights you can handle. Even those slopes are in here! Waterfalls, water sides are in here as well! there are even poles and vines! I know that usually i give a lower mark for lack of textured background and stuff like that, but this totalness of this conversion just outweighs that. I love it and it would make any sonic fan happy!
10/10
Animations
Great! All the animations from hidden palace are here and kicking. Nothing is missing! Goreat job!
10/10
colors
PERFECT IN EVERY WAY! Everything looks correct.
10/10
pallet events
I’m not rating for anything like poles or anything. All I have to say is what happened to the water? There was water in hidden Palace.
Masking
Masking is pretty good. Straight lines for the most part and everything tiles without masking bugs. Great job!
10/10
Reusability
Well not so great. you are limited thanks to no outdoor background. You cans till do quite a bit though with this tileset. I just wish there was an outdoor background so I could do a mixture.
7/10

Final score: 47/50 +-5 points for being TSF only. You could have taken away some things to make room.
Score: 9.2
Rank: A
DR? Hell yeah! This is every sonic fans dream of a conversion. this would get a 10 if there was an outdoor background and it was 1.23 Download right now!

Is there a readme or description or something? Looking at the screenshot kind of gives an idea, but what does it exactly do? Does it just record singleplayer games, or can it do multiplayer too? Is it anything like the demo that plays if you leave jj2 on the title screen long enough?

OK, It doesn’t look like a robot. You don’t need to do anyhting than dodge the flails to win this. Far too easy. What is the meaning of the tube in the start? nothing. Many good lvl makers use custom bosses, but making one won’t make the level good. Not bad, just keep trying and make differerent lvls too.

I did Know that. I just think they are cool to use as alternative bosses, and I know they aren’t knew, but I haven’t seen them used very much. There is alot of cool stuff you get make usng MCE’s for thosse who know what that is.

For Kax: Is it the screen flicker effect? Part of the cuboids is the screen will go completely multicolored bars( like TV fuzz )and the more you make go berserk(kill all cubes)the more often and longer it lasts. It might be what crashes

Eyecandy A lot of eyecandy. Well placed too. Nothing to say here.

5/5

Enemies Also a lot of (well placed) enemies. Those bees were also good xD.

5/5

Fun I had fun, but the part with the warps and the fact you needed 100 coins were less fun. Also, there was in the tower with those jars a bug with a spring. you couldn’t get on it because you got stuck in the wall.

4/5

Music The music fitted with the story of the level, it was kind of creepy. you heard it bad though, because of the sound of the flames.

2/3

For your information: these bosses not exactly new as they’re just respectively old Devan, Bolly, and Uterus with misplaced (uncached) sprites. If you were to put a Devan in the first level, your “Hyper Jazz” would become a Devan. Etc.

Eyecandy There were a lot of trees, totems, waterfalls, flowers and strange squares in the wall (what they did there, i don’t know…) in other words, well done

4/5

Enemies Not many, it could be more. I didn’t notice a difference between normal and hard either. Because of the lack of uch enemies this level was just simple. pity.

3/5

Fun I simply had fun, and those texts were fun too (and yes, i’m a n00b that uses jjcoins to check out what’s the bonus xD )

5/5

Music it simply fitted to the tileset and the level. It’s grasslandy (is that a word?)

Note: this is NO review!

Good try, but do not give up, no really… don’t!

I think you can do better with some examples. So I’ll give you some links to help you:

You do not need arenas with Tuf Bosses and enemies in it to make the Robot Boss harder. For example, download this level.
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=1908

I’ve also created two examples of nontraditional Bosses, one of them is a big Robot Boss:
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=4930

And also my friend Gus uses nontraditional Bosses, so download his packs.
http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/browse.php?userUploadsID=4964

Check them out and then try again. I’m sure you can do it. DON’T STOP!

I think if you add the word “Concept” to your level title (Which I feel is what you are demonstrating here), you would avoid the reviews by people who are looking for quality (AKA review by sonicnathan)

The design is simple: basically a puzzle boss that solves itself, but the idea of waiting around while it does that seems rather unorthodox for even a puzzle boss, even if you are defending yourself from enemies.

This concept might be more believable in a war-theme (“Hold the base until we can send reinforcements…”), but as a generator thingy?… maybe not…

A good idea as a timer…

This was rather interesting. I would have liked more eyecandy for starters (Since I really couldn’t tell I was fighting this huge generator robot thing).

The boss concept isn’t bad, but is rather wasted in its execution. The fun comes from a Wario Ware like sense of trying to figure out what the hell is going on (I won’t spoil the specifics) but once you do it becomes all too easy to win (Just stay light on your feet, and it’ll be easy to avoid the two schwarzengaurds which provide the biggest threat.)

However, once you figure it all out it just doesn’t have any other reason to come back to it, and theres no real challenge past “How do I kill this thing?” Your experimentation time may vary but I figured it out just right before I died the first time.

I say download, since its worth a look. Its a semi-interesting approach (even though the mechanics have all been done before) and unlike the recent Bosses pack by DX, its not out to kill you. So it has that going for it. Just be warned, that the gimmick wears thin far too quickly.

Eyecandey: Bland. Nothing there at all. Layer 8 but that’s all. (maybe a little layer 3) The eyecandey is so bland I could have made something like this in 2 minutes! Layer 4 is empty and you used about 6 tiles and 1 animation.
1/10

Gameplay: Non. All it is you fall trough a hole and go to a badly done boss. All you do is kill turtles (Which there are to many of them) while dodging Tuf boss boomerangs. There’s a robot boss at the top but he’s impossible to get to. I couldn’t see a way to complete the level. If you can complete the level I’ll update my review. Edit: You can complete it, but the SCE spawns so slowly I died before even one forth of the health was gone!

Pickups: Non. Period.
