Summer review!

Space Sucks is a battle level I had fun betatesting in, and it’s quite a good first attempt at an multiplayer level. At first impressions, the level was quite tight and small, but it has good flow and there are always places to go…even if it is a dead end. ;-)

The gameplay, flow and event placement is this level’s strongest aspects, because the eyecandy hardly takes advantage of all the tiles available in Blade’s Space tileset. There is a measly one animated tile in JCS, which I don’t think is even used in the level, the background consists of grey walls, a canyon/Martian landscape, and a boring, dark sky, while the foreground is mostly just fencing. The whole level is so monochromatic, with moat of the tiles being either grey or white. Space, as everyone knows, should be mainly black space occasionally dotted with stars, but people tend to like to put in flashy nebulae and meteor showers. Space Sucks should really have been more unrealistic, in my opinion… However, everything that is there fits in well, with the exception of a minor tile bug in layer 2.

A lot of tiles get in the way in Space Sucks, but thanks to clever layer useage and float-ups, is fairly easy to navigate this level with all rabbits. Maybe not Lori. There are some dead ends, but they lead to useful stuffness like seeker PUs and carrots. The flow is all right, and I don’t think it can get better than this for such a small and semi-tight level. However, it is darn easy to camp at the top carrot’s suckertube, because of the presence of a blaster PU and fastfires. Using triggers that enables people to shoot in but not out (thus rendering the camper’s advantageous position useless) would be nice.

I think Space Sucks is good for all servers, especially insanely laggy YACR JDC events (mwahahahahahah), and duels, of course. It’s a good attempt at a battle level, and slightly above average. I guess I’ll give it a 6.5…it’s not that great, but you should download it because people are already beginning to duel in it for JDC. ;-P

EDIT: Yay! I got the longest review!

And the most dull…oh well. :-P

EDIT: Level has been re-uploaded with triggers, some eyecandy (I think) and other bug fixes.

Yes, powers are easy to find on purpose, I hate those secrets, when people playing it first time can make absolutely no roast. But of course, power-ups are things what give your weapon double damage, so of course, it can’t be so easy to get. And one more thing I forgot – I made it in one day ;)

Iluz knows that Iluz land was too large for it’s own good, so then he/she(I don’t know) creates a new pack that feels the same, but smaller. And it’s every bit as good as Iluz Land, and maybe even better. A sentence which here means ‘Still below a 5’
Let’s start off with Mission Metroid. Ok, there are plenty of sprite sites around. A quick tileset is all what was needed(seriously). Instead we have Blade’s tileset for Space stuff. It’s a good tileset, but for Metroid? Ah-no.The Music is even worse. It’s some generic 70s techno mixed with people laughing. The Music has a horrendously Un-metroid feel. Oh, and in pure Iluz fashion you collect lots of gems. To destroy the motherbrain(Which is just a bunch of computers) you collect some TNT. Beat some badly placed enemies and move on. To where? To Devan. Who apparently has decided to stop you with THE SUPER BOT!(Fear it.) The Superbot is an easy boss. Give it some advantage, people. Placing it in a small flat area with Devan watching ovehead is giving me the advantage. Anyways beat it and Devan says: “Impossible I lose.” Hopefully you like Engrish for our next level is..
LOTS OF BOSSES! WHich starts of giving you tons of fastfires(in pure Tons of Bosses level fasion) and some NPCs spouting out engrish Star wars phrases. Next comes a bunch of bosses. But all I got to was Devan, an unused Super bot(You need a different devan for that to work. I know. Shocker), Bolly, and Bubba. My shots hurt Bubba so I decided to focus my time on him. And when I beat him I get the message of “Lori:Lot’s of bosses”
The next level seems to be done by someone else because it’s worse than usual and it starts with “Welcome to my level” but eventually it feels like Iluz made it because you collect crap for no reason. Then fight 5 bosses in one arena or something. i wasn’t in the mood to fight umpteen bosses on an airboard flying near 90 too many hurt events being chased by uterus. So Iskipped it. The next level has a bad placement of tiles(A masked erm, I’m not in the mood I’ll get a pic up maybe) so I had cheat to get past that. Then theres tons of lizards, a big fall, more float lizards and a fight with 1(WHAT? ONE? What happened to 5 Shmijillion?)bilsy.
The Eyecandy is once again too plain, and everything past the first level is too lame.
If this was just the first level you would recieve a 3, maybe a 4. I liked that level to some extent, but everything else is horrible, bringing the score to 1.8.
Steer clear of this pack. If you are just craving for the SP munchies, just go play TDI,TR,FSP, and other more memeroble packs all over again.

It’s an OK level. Good enough to host though. The level isn’t too big that you hardly could find anybody on the map and not too small that you keep getting hurt :) There’s enough weapons to keep your ammo up enough. The powers are eazy to find but usaully take some effort to get to them

Wow.. I was finding some hotel level to play in multiplayer, and then we sa w this.. Rayman 2 hotel.. we both are kind of Rayman fans.. so we uploaded it.
We played it so long. it had lot of fun stuff, and my favourite, Prison ship rollercoaster and cinema. and here’s my
rating:

CINEMA/ROLLERCOASTERS:

The cinema was kind of nice, there was only one “movie” but somehow i just liked the idea. Plum dropping to (i don’t remember name) robot’s head.
so my rating of cinema is.. hmm.. 7.
And then the rollercoasters. i have seen lot of rollercoasters in hotels, but they almost every time have been just sucker tube, and not any eyecandy, like tracks. but this one has. They are kinda short, but i went to them many times with my cousin. i give them 8

SWIMMING POOL/JUMPGAME/GOLF:

Swimming poor was pretty eh.. poor..
i just give it 6.7
And the Jumpgame. i didn’t go really at those jumping games but i don’t know really.. i give 6.7 too
And golf. I loved it. but a bit too easy. but yes i liked it a lot. 7

PINBALL/FREEZER TAG/ FROG GAME:

We didn’t really play the pinball. but yeah the idea is normal and ect. i give it 7. freezer tag i didn’t play this game, because my cousin had to leave when we had to.. but i like the idea..
7. Frog game, nah.. very short.. but yes
ok idea, i give 6 for it

SHOPS/FUN FACTOR:

shops was a good idea we bought alot of things.. ok i give it 7. Fun factor:
shoot the power up game was fun, but easy. so was the rocket game. i give fun facot a 7.1

HOTEL OVERALL:

Rooms are nice. nice, beds and baths.
And the one room, i don’t remember name.. some madness or soemthing. when you go next ti plum and press jump, you can get stuck.
and ground floor. And you can play as battle, CTF or Single player.. I think i give this hotel a 8.5! you deserve it!

holy shit, youre MaliceX? So you wrote that shit? ownage dude.

thanks for the review dude. I havent got any other plans to be remixing shit – I just thought id give it a go because the original midi was so awesome. I did it with guitar pro, which I just use for reading tabs. But I thought id open the midi in there and see what it looked like, then I couldnt help fucking with it.

To be honest it seems to me that quite of a few of the good features of it came about by chance. The way I went through and edited it was just going through from start to finish, deleting shit i didnt want there, or just moving it out of the way for future use. So sometimes when it carried on playing past the “remix front”, different tracks would play on top of each other because they had been moved – which sometimes gave some cool combinations, which I had to use.

If I tried to do anything else like this I would probably just end up making almost exactly the same kinda thing, but with a different “main” riff. If a midi finds me that is as cool as your original one, then maybe ill be forced to have another go at remixing it – I definately enjoyed doing this one.

rock on dude, thanks again

EDIT- I will rate less harshly if J2O has a “Beginer’s/Simple Single Player” area. Until then, I must rate as fairly as possible(which means I rate like I normally do).
Avid readers of my reviews(that means -1 people) will recall the messy and sloppy review I did on Badger’s “Redwall Abbey” level. That was a level that showed promise, but was too short and too simple. This level is like the latter, but nothing at all like the former. This level has no potential. For added fun play in 300×200, since it really doesn’t matter.
Gameplay-2/10
Too simple and linear. Some triggers add a point since most levels like this don’t use those.
Layout-1/10
Linear, linear paths, and Lizards and turtles placed in simple places. Horrendus.
Placement-.5/10
Sadly, the enemies have no edge over Jazz/Spaz/Lori. The crates/triggers are in no special area either. There was one instance in which the lizards attacked an unsuspecting player who used a trigger crate which was deviously nice.
Eyecandy-1/10
At least you used a layer 5 background, otherwise What eyecandy?
Story-NA/NA
Erm… Some british alternate universe version of Hocus Pocus is attacked by Lizards and Turtles.
Extra Fun-NA/NA Play as Lori and use her sidekick-ish manuver while holding Shift and the jump button, make sure you hit a lizard. WHOOOOOOOOOSH!
Final score-1.125(or 1.1)
Download reccomendation? No, but the british Terexin/Fooruman is good for a quick laugh at how stupid it seems.
Avid Reader count-Is still at -1.
Better than- a Sad beach
Worse than-Redwall Abbey(which recieved a 2.0 from me.)
The number of extra junk in this review to make it seem longer and better-6

Spoy hosted this like 30 times online and now Im going to review this (not with a usual long review though).

The levels are fun to play. The concept isnt really new (I made a level like this two years ago, even though its unreleased and unfinished dozens of people saw this =P. Violet also made stuff like this and Kirby SSB made more primitive forms of this) but its still original. The obstacles are nicely thought up of and a lot of teamwork is required. The levels are really fun to play at first, but they get boring once you play them for too long.
The eyecandy here and stuff is rather poor. Not much effort was put into making this level look good (nearly all the effort used seemed to be put into making the levels play good) and simple tilebugs arent even fixed. Its not too bad, but I would definately enjoy these levels more if they were pleasing to look at while I played them. Otherwise, this is a nice pack, although spoy overhosts it to death already =P. Rating for this would be a 7.5 and a download reccomendation. GG.
Oh, and btw, the cutscene owned. This made me boost up the overall rating of the pack by a few decimal points (although you wont get to know what the original rating was ;D). Nice and original cutscenes with innocent turtles being blown up ;D…

Overall Eyecandy

Well, overall, I didn’t expect much eyecandy as quite old and limited tilesets. But Evilmike surprised us again. Using crippled tiles, pipes, waterfalls, and a lot of amazing things. Lights, a whole new eyecandy feel to many tilesets. Waz 03 has a new colour for tiles and such. It keeps going on. There are shadows for once in deserto, Tarlet CLM and loads more! There are even bee-nests in one of the levels, and a lot of destructing scenery. Even … See for yourself.

Gameplay
Rating : 9.7

The feel is great and the gameplay is so good. There are secrets, bonuses, tactics, choices to make, and loads of places to go. The feel of this is amazing. There is even a new boss working. The rocket turtle is quite easy to beat if you use your brain. And there are also spike effects, sideways, upside-down. Even spikes that arent in the tileset. See JCS for that if you want to know how. There is a lot of difficulty in areas, and a lot of ease and repetition in others. The pack even has its own 3 difficulties. Does it rock or what? The one thing I dislike, that it is possible to get infinate pts. Gj =(

Layout
Rating : 10.0

Don’t ask why you got a 10 already. You just rock, or your levels do at least. Anyway, the levels all fit together, it fits in such a good way. Like you loop the whole thing. You visit the western barricade twice. And obviously the sewers and many other places. This pack just keeps on getting better!

Layout: Layout is kinda basic, nothing really original in it. The level forces you to jump more often instead of using floatups and springs (Which can be good or bad depending on your taste). I dont like the masking of the sucker tubes though, they seem to jut out more than the ground and you crash into them while running. 5,28 could also use a bunch of one ways (right under the red spring). The top passages to the base also force you to go into 1 tile wide sucker tubes, which gets annoying especially if you were chased or rushed or something.
Rating: 7.7

Eyecandy: Kinda basic. Lots of places are left empty without any layer 5. Poles are an interesting way to mimic antennae except that the first few times or so it feels like there is a pole event on them. Otherwise, there doesnt seem to be anything new or eyecatching about eyecandy. Lightning also gets annoying, especially if its in the foreground.
Rating: 7.5

Placement of Stuff: Interesting. 5 powerups. 4 out of the 5 are behind masked tiles, and 2 out of the 5 are only attainable by Electroblasters. 5 pus seems kinda crazy for this level, but the carrot placement gets even better. A full energy in the center and two +1s surrounding it, interesting idea. I’ve tested through the level and found nothing bad about it, and I’ve never seen carrots placed like that before so =D. Ammo is placed nicely enough.
Rating: 8.2

Gameplay/Flow:
Floatups are placed nicely, springs are placed well for the most part. The ground underneath the two red springs at the very side needs one ways. On second thought, why are those springs still there? They seem kind of pointless since the green spring + floatups gets you up to the base itself. As I mentioned before, sucker tubes jut out more than they should. The parts that force you to jump sometimes get on my nerves, but lrk calls them “obstacles” =P.
Rating: 7.5

Overall (Not an average): A good level, but it could use more things to make it stand out. I don’t particularly like the tileset, and the eyecandy could use more work, but the level plays alright except for the few annoying things i mentioned before. This level also seems big enough to handle large amounts of people, meaning it could be hosted in JDC events in the future.
Rating: 7.9

Final Rating: 7.76 ~ 7.8. Download reccomended.

Although I do not care much for names, I’d much rather call this by its file name “Apple Land” I like that name much better. Now on to the review!

For some reason this level’s tileset goes so well with the use of apples, almost to the extent of the lemons with Ceramicus in BR’s Lemon Nightmare; the level has an atmosphere, one that I like, others should as well. To accentuate the theme, the background has a dark red fade. One of the downfalls of the theme is the music choice, although it’s not particularly bad, it does not fit with the theme well in my opinion, there could definitely have been a better choice.

The tileset usage is what you’d expect to be made from this set along with a few other decorations that use tricks from other levels; certain color tiles used with transparency to change the color of tiles for example. So really nothing too original.

The level has a solid symmetrical design, allowing three direct paths to each base which makes defense almost pointless as it’s likely for the capturer to grab the carrot at the top middle unless the defender is extremely skilled. Especially considering there are plently of slopes: there is a bouncer powerup (included in warp for 10 coins) and easily obtainable bouncer ammo near some slopes; killing is not at all difficult for the attackers, or the defenders in some cases.

Camping is an aspect of this level, and needs to be implemented to a huge extent if one is to win. The top middle has the only full nrg with the coin warp (all coins have a 31 regen and are placed sparsely around the level). The bouncer power is the main powerup to be used, it will be used a lot, it’s the main weapon that can be hogged by one team and could decide who wins the match. Close matches aren’t likely in this level. Although there is an RF powerup included, Chasing isn’t easy here, the top area may be good for the use of RFs though. The RF powerup is located underwater which pretty much makes it useless to attack people there with it. The bottom area will be the least touched place.

I like the level mainly for it’s theme. As for the gameplay. Most players will not like such a sparse placement of coins, and the ridiculous regen time on them. Players will resort to playing with the RF powerup most of the time, resulting in many 3hks. If you like levels with a nice theme and like to be evil by hogging things from other players, then this is the level for you.

Quite platformy, these levels are. Not really solid. E-Prime can be a great example for that. Anyway, as this is a duel pack intentionally, its quite okay for these levels to be small. I might be a strict reviewer or maybe a kind one, I dont really care.. D=

Well, the eyecandy was typical from what you would expect from this certain overused tileset. A few nice things, but they arent so noticeable. BR’s level in tubelec could have been used for an eyecandy example.
The gameplay suits the duel, but its quite hard and annoying to get the bouncer pu. And I think that was the only one I could find. There are a few tactics, not much. And yet the tubes can be a nuisance.
The layout, well its really platformy. So flame me. Thx. Anyway the layout was okayish, but still not worthy of the Chinese gods. It seemed a bit biased. Jazz biases, Spaz biases and turrets which you can get stuck in, but only if you try hard.
The pickups were placed okayishly in this pack. Could have been better.

Tiny 2

It is evident that I like this one the most. And that it has a few original concepts in the eyecandy. Good job for an underused tileset. Nice 1up placement for sparkling effect and waterfalls are good. Good Job.
The gameplay is good here too, as there are platforms to destroy, the level is probably better off without carrots and as instagib, as all of these are small. I say this would be a really neat instagib pack, but its okay for a small quick duel pack. It shouldnt take too long.
The layout was good except platformy again. Underwater platforms too. Should be pretty solid, but oh well. The top area has no point. If you want a good level, everything you place needs a reason and an attention grabber, such as a PU.
It is okay how the ammo is placed.

The level has not really any eyecandy, possibly because you used a bad tileset. Or one I really dislike. It deserves a bit of rating, but I dont like it so much. Keep that in mind. You also made some nice ways of excusing the limited tiles in this set.
The gameplay was averagish. But still a bit annoying as the RF PU isnt needed at all in this level. Its quite tight and small. If it were open and mad it should keep it but it isnt.
The layout was yet again platformy. It needs work, you need to avoid placing platforms, I used to think it made it easy, but these levels cant stick with it. =(
The ammo is adequate, but an RF PU isnt needed here as explained earlier.

The level is a bit less platformy than the others and has okay eyecandy for the set.
The gameplay is okay but quite spazbiased. The level has slots that are quite hard to get into.
The layout is probably the least platformy, still platformy though. Needs a bit of work. It has adequate and sufficient PUs.

This probably excited me as much as BR’s level. LRK obviously tried making a successful level, and guess what? He did. Anyway, the level is a bit big, consisting of 5 PUs. 4 are different. There are 2 Blaster PUs. Can be a bit campy at middle and loads of ammo. A while ago, it used to just be loads of bouncers and RFs. Now a bit more fair. 3 carrots quite cramped together.

Eyecandy
Rating : 7.7

Well, not many exciting eyecandy effects but at least the places arent cramped with lack of eyecandy, or too much eyecandy. Anyway, the level is quite normal. All the shadows were dealt with. Loads of tubes and nice buildings, this level almost has the feel of a bit of a city.

Gameplay
Rating : 8.2

It actually is fun to play in. Doesn’t suit duels at all, but anything else + is good. There is good flow, and adequate springs, some tubes are a bit hard to get into, but not if you have a brain. The powerups are moderatly easy to notice and get. There isnt much tactic at all in this level, apart from firing weapons at right times. A few RF chases are good. I cant say much.

Layout
Rating : 8.5
Comments
Well, the layout is pretty solid, and pretty campy. The flagholder has like 2000 ways to never be hit muhahaha, but but but, if you are smart and familiar with the concept of the brain, you should be able to prevent it. Peppermints arent ever used enough, you can chase up slopes with it. Bouncers = Vice versa. Anyway, you can also fire seeks through the tubes or something, double attacking always helps! It’s pretty easy to navigate around here, and it has a city-like layout. Good enough for me.

Placement
Rating : 8.2
Now that LRK editted it, enough toasters to attack with. Before there were one billion bouncers and RFs. And like 6 toasters? Not even at all. Anyway now that it is changed, a bit better. A lot of camping due to the where the PUs are and the ammo is, but I guess that is how LRK planned it. Anyway GJ
