Hmm… Literally Frozen Spring! How suitable for an Easter which was remarkably cold (at least: here in the Netherlands where I live). I found this pack like three days ago and I tried to play it.
The two levels are set in an winter version of the Easter tileset from The Secret Files.
When I started to play, the first thing I saw was that… it was cold haha. But especially in the first level this cold was very well shown. There were a couple of extra lives hidden in the walls. And maybe it was not your plan, but you could clearly see where they were. That made it very easy to find them. A bit too easy actually. However, the glow of the lives shined through the walls, like it was ice shining in the sun. And I actually really liked that to see and find it well fitting for the atmosphere of the level.
The difficulty of both levels was pretty high. It took me three days before I finally managed to complete this package with only two levels! I am an experienced JJ2 player, I played these levels on the Easy setting and still found them difficult! However: I missed a boss at the end of the pack…
And there also are the glitchy swing vines in level 2! And the worst thing is: they aren’t even necessary! I think if you would simply remove them, it wouldn’t be such of a miss.
OK, I’ll give you the points for this level.
That makes it a total score of 78 out of 90.
For the final rating: 78 ÷ 90 × 9 + 1 = 8.8. Download recommendation!
I like the name and I also like how this is uploaded at exactly the right time for such a level. I started playing this when hosting it online in sp mode, but something went wrong as there were no enemies and sp only tiles, though I thought this was possible.
The background is set quite low, causing little of it to be seen most of the time. When being at the bottom of the level with ice near, it seems as if you’re on the lowest point possible, though if you look on the background you’ll see that there is still ground below you, which feels a bit strange. The ice was a nice idea though, some spots were too weak to stand on and you would fall through and get hurt.
I like the tips on the signs and also the ammo placement has been well done. Imo there are a bit too many enemies, especially those annoying flying lizards. In the first level I couldn’t find the crate to destroy the blocks on 209,17.
The airboard-only passage was another nice original trick from you, as well as the following fly-up-and-destroy-four-crates-passage, where you had to push the crates down into TNT’s as you couldnt buttstomp because you were on an airboard, although I was only able to find 3 TNTs to destroy them with.
In the end I think this is quite some original level, I would recommend people playing it, especially when they feel like playing something which is not too brain-crushing. Hosting online could be a great option too, though I hope it works well normally, as it didn’t with me.
I think you managed to show the weather that it should warm up now, as it has been easter already. J2O still tries to do the same thing, as I can still see snow on the background of this website.
Eyecandy: 7
Gameplay: 7,5
Originality: 8
Final Grade: 7,5
A typical Rag level that doesn’t have anything new or original (except that the tileset hasn’t really been used yet) It’s the kind of level we need for the Bash, good gameplay, good size for a Battle level and good placement with a lot of fast fires like more levels that Rag has made in the last few years. Download definitely recommended.
And that’s even more better than your previous pack.
Well, I’ve enjoyed this pack in the past when I just came to J2O… It was very enjoyable thing and quite nice adventure.
It’s good as well, as real Lost Vikings game (not so good as original, but still OK)
The first public full implementation of a custom game mode in AngelScript, and it’s well worthy of it. While the included level is a bit plain and questionably balanced, the concept of the game mode more than makes up for it. I hope someone makes more levels for this game mode!
So good, but it also works on TSF!
The Y-scroll being limited is dedicated to clouds.
The way for a high platform is:
1. Go to any wall. (Left or right)
2. Hold the down key and press right ctrl.
3. Then jump on the platform and climb all way until you reach the Devannic Rocket (the Devan’s boss arena and was controlled by Queen Boss).
4. When the next level loads in memory, clouds turn dark.
5. When you defeat Devan, clouds are light again.
spend more time on level editing!
great tile but bad level!
I made a level by myself (screenshot)
cool idea
Okay Windows 98 tileset with vista icons.
The level is poor.
Event tiles missing
Background missing
Very original
Good Tileset but…
where are the event tiles (spikes, poles, sucker tubes and hooks)
The tileset style is just a basic bunch of lines and gradient, thing that you wouldn’t see either in a retro game or a modern platformer.
It works well enough, all its parts join eachother nicely, and there are good eyecandy bits, like the steel pillars and the burning stations, as well as timed spikes and destroyable blocks.
You seem really eager to upload new levels everyday, but remember the rule 7!
To be honest, I didn’t like either all that much since I think giving monsters more energy makes the game boring, and not harder. The palette manipulations (especially in River Secrets) are very pretty, though.
No Way Out is a really nice level, and a nice showcase of some of the new possibilities AngelScript brings to JJ2. I liked the open-ended gameplay and not-too-easy-not-too-hard difficulty, it made for a relaxed experience (also thanks to the excellent music choice and decent eyecandy).
River Secrets is pretty terrible, and has so many glitches it’s practically unplayable (I somehow managed to both die and reach the next episode at the same time, only a few tiles from the start position).
So all in all it’s pretty hard to rate this level pack, since it’s basically one good and one bad level. I’m just going to mostly ignore River Secrets, and give this a 7.5 for No Way Out, which is definitely worth playing.
No Way Out is a decent concept and a decent level. Its script is oddly-written at moments, but it works fine and makes the level enjoyable. Rating: 8.
River Secrets is a decent concept and terrible execution. Both level design and the script are a failure. Occasional glitches bring the level close to unplayable. Rating: 3.
