Distopia
EvilMike’s “Distopia”, which uses the excellent “War Torn Night” tile set by Toxic Bunny, is arguably one of the most famous Capture the Flag levels of all time, and is definitely one of my favorites. It’s not because it’s the best level ever. It is very good, but it’s not a perfect level in any respect, but the fun of both casual and competitive (especially casual) player in the level makes it one of the best plays around. At first glance, Distopia is a fairly standard Capture the Flag fare. The level consists of two bases on the bottom but opposite sides of the levels. The rest of the level consists of two passageways in the middle and a “sucker tube tunnel” of sorts. The rest of the level is stacked upon the base. While this layout may sound a bit focused on the bottom of the level, the placement of the items and carrots make it run extremely smoothly. This even distribution is accomplished by the placement of the full energy carrot and the seeker power-up. The seeker power-up is placed more or less in the middle of the level. It’s pretty much a necessity to have the seeker power-up during normal game play, since other than the bouncy power-up (which loses some value because much of the level consists of open area) it’s the only ammo that isn’t basic, non power-up. Flow is definitely one of the level’s strong points, which partially comes from its fairly typical layout. While the level does not take any risks in layout, it still has an extremely good flow. During game play, I never was annoyed by accidentally running into walls. The only part that could ever give beginners trouble would be the carrot, since it is easy to miss the platform that it is on and fall down, requiring you to loop back in order to get the carrot. Getting from base to base was fairly easy. The only complaint I could think of was that the level did not give much time for a low-life (low in health, that is) to get from the base to the carrot or the seeker power-up and then back. Because it is so easy to get from base to base, the opponent could simply score several times while the player was off getting the carrot. The level is fairly small, but not enough so to be considered “tiny.” Weapon placement was very good, but if it wasn’t for the seeker power-up, one could say that the ammo would be a bit on the light side. As for the location of the ammo, I have no complaints, other than that the bouncy power-up seems to have just been placed out in the open, where you wouldn’t exactly expect a power-up, but that’s as much an eyecandy thing as it is a weapon placement thing. Eyecandy is outstanding. The tile set, “War Torn Night” by Toxic Bunny, is a diverse tile set featuring what looks like a city. I can’t completely say that it looks as “War Torn” as the name may suggest, but it still is a great tile set for this level. There isn’t a ton of eyecandy, but even the normal blocks look so good that it still doesn’t detract from the level’s quality that there is not much outright eyecandy. There are, as is usual with levels of this ilk, absolutely no eyecandy glitches that I could notice, and the tile set was used perfectly. I wouldn’t expect any less from EvilMike, and this level isn’t disappointing in any respect. While Distopia may not use some complex amazing trigger system that is to revolutionize level making, it has been extremely influential on today’s level making. It doesn’t have much flash or gee-whiz features, but Distopia is an example of a simple but great level at its best. It doesn’t feature much more than the fundamentals, but fundamentals are where it excels in. It’s hard not to like this level. It’s fun, enjoyable, and always a good play, especially when it isn’t in a tournament environment. A great Capture the Flag level that anyone could learn something with, and definitely worth a download. An 8.7 might not seem as high as this level deserves, but it is, after all, small and not complex. It’s still an amazing level. Download this now. You won’t regret it.[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]

AH, YES, FLYING PUMPKINS! BEST LEVELS EVER LOLOLOl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, this is an intentionally bad pack, obviously. And this is a classic look at n00b levels. In fact, it it almost completely stereotyping every n00bism out there. Yes, everything here is a joke on one or more aspects of n00bish levelmaking. Bad eyecandy, weapon clumping, that and a bag of chips. So, is this worth downloading? No. Is this bad? Yes, but it is bad in a good way. I’m not sure what I am talking about, so I will give this a 1.5 and go off to sulk in the corner, waiting for my sanity to return. Homeworks. School. Detention.

Never before has such simple words caused such great fear. But now, you can put an end to it, at least, in a virtual world, by using the School v3 tileset by Midn (did I spell the name correctly?) to create your ideal school. :-)

The tileset is much better than its predecessors, School v2 and v1 (although I must admit, I was more impressed by v1 than v3) and the tileset is exactly what its name says. It’s a school. :-) Quite a nice school too, with everything a modern torture house for youngsters have. Soda machines, desks, books, libraries, computers, angry teachers, black boards, students, bullies, dirty toilets, yucky food and various sports equipments.

First, I was a bit put off by the bad masking of the teachers since you always tend to bump into them. Also, I dislike the masking of the yellow ropes and the book shelves. They slow you down too much and you’re never sure whether they are masked or not. This can lead to problems in multi-player lvls since ppl will get roasted if they accidentally bump into things.

But enough of the bad news!

Even though the occasional teacher or bookshelf gets into your way, it does not matter a single bit if you look at the rest of the tileset.

School’s eyecandy is so detailed and comes in such a great variety that once I found myself stopping to admire the walls and got killed by a turtle. :-D I have never, ever seen such detailed eyecandy before and in fact, it’s so detailed my eyes hurt now. Evil looking eyes looks out from cracks in the walls, graffiti decorate the blackboards, uncountable school utilities and equipment fill the class rooms and I haven’t even mentioned the teachers and students yet. Ppl who thinks that their tileset has got good eyecandy should definitely take a long look at School.

Ok, so there’s nothing wrong about the eyecandy. What about the tiles? Are everything a tileset needs there? Midn hasn’t forgotten anything. There are purple suckertubes (I’m a bit doubtful about the colour purple, but as long as the tubes work…), destruct blocks in form of books (a note: I didn’t destroy any English books ;-), vines, hooks and of course poles (sadly, not V-poles, I couldn’t find any).

Because of the detailness and the masking, School is better suited for (gah!) hotels and single-player lvls because the player has more time and doesn’t need to watch out for opponents and thus ignoring the eyecandy.

If you happen to not like the masking at all, download School for its eyecandy. If you don’t like the eyecandy and the masking, download anyway because I said so. :-P

Great tileset, excellent eyecandy and very original. A little more work on the masking would earn this tileset a big, fat 9.

Strong download recommendation.

Cheers,

White Rabbit.

Ok, I’ll rate this since noone else dares to…

Well, to be honest, I’d say this is a more mellow version of the Technoir song. Too mellow for my tastes, Technoir (pronounced TechnoWar) should have a more..violent song (it’s a war zone out there).
Still the author did a nice job of remixing. He doubled the amount of patterns for the intro (me likes, gets you into the song), replaced instruments (some are better than the original) even his voice is in it (?) And guess what: it says in the details some samples are by Alexander Brandon (the JJ2 and JJ3 musician) How about that?

Conclusion:
Not bad, with some tweaking it can be improved. Not the kind of music I’d use for a level, just for listening. A 7 with a .2 bonus (for trying)

Despite my previous guess, I actually enjoyed this level. True, it’s a bit short. True, the eyecandy’s not good. But it’s.. original, shall we say.
The first level is the main level. It’s a basic, short level, but with a story. Devan has created an army of huge megaphones (yes, the background eyecandy in this pack is used as some of the platforms) that will hypnotize rabbits. When you shoot them, coins come out, which is quite handy, as you need some coins (not all of them) to finish the level.
The end of the first level consists of a combination Robot/Bolly boss. Nothing special. The second level is a boss level with Devan, who has turned on the megaphones. All the walls are megaphones, and you’re pretty much constantly hit by smoke rings. Still, you must fight Devan.
Don’t let the eyecandy throw you off, you could have some fun from this. But only shoot the megaphones once.
