In fact, I literally did not ever open or try using the program before I started on the Carrottus levels, but I definately did learn a LOT along the road to completing this pack, which may or may not be noticable as you (the player) progress through my lvls. I was inspired to start after one rainy day I decided to play through Newspaz's Mission Spaz: Foreseeable Future, which opened my eyes to the possibilities of what can be done using the editor, and what mainly attracted my attention was the very customizable event system and possibility of importing custom sprites and graphics. I had a bit of a tough time with the learning curve at the beginning, and would like to say thanks to Violet for helping me understand certain aspects and answering my questions. * * * THESE LEVELS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE SHAREWARE VERSION * * * * * * GO BUY OR DOWNLOAD THE FULL VERSION OF JAZZ1 WITH ALL 9 * * * * * * EPISODES IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THESE LEVELS! * * * Obviously, this pack will also overwrite some of the original Jazz1 files in order to work. Creating a copy of the Jazz1 folder specifically for this pack is reccomended unless you want to permanently overwrite some files. Also, the difficulty level in these levels will probably be challenging for most players. If you find yourself stuck or need some general advice on getting through a level, read the level summaries in section 3; they provide general advice, strategies and even expose certain secrets that are a great deal of help if you are struggling. Normal Mode is reccomended for most players, anything harder will require careful planning and skill to beat. Easy mode is soft. I would greately appreciate feedback and any reviews or comments. I'm considering doing a sequel, but only if this draws enough attention and people are willing to play it. No point in using time and hard work on something if nobody cares about it, right? So if you played through this and enjoyed it, drop me a review or even a comment :) ___________________________________________________________________________ _ (X2) Disclaimer ___________________________________________________________________________ _ Do not modify or distribute this mod, it's available for free from this link: http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/6739/lost-ages-v12/ Jazz Jackrabbit 1 is developed and published by Epic MegaGames. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP! I can't stress this enough, JJ1's resolution is tiny and jumping into unknown territory could easy land you on top of an enemy or into a pit of spikes if you aren't careful. IF YOU AREN'T SURE OF WHATS UNDER YOU, DONT FALL! I don't care if people whine in their reviews about jumping into a pit and dying or falling on something, I WILL IGNORE ANY/ALL OF THESE COMMENTS because honestly this is an aspect of the game that you have to deal with. Using caution when exploring new areas and learning the level is my best advice if you find yourself dying often this way. 2. LOOK FOR ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS. While most of the levels are at least fairly linear, there is often an easier way to get from point A to point B. Use your brains and pick a different path if one isnt working for you :P 3. USE HEALTH WISELY. Nuff said really. ___________________________________________________________________________ _ (X4) Level Summaries ___________________________________________________________________________ _ There is no real underlying story to these levels. They were an experiment in a time machine to the genesis of the game that started the franchise, Jazz Jackrabbit 1. Therefore it is fitting that all these levels take place in a lost time long, long ago. How the intrepid little green hero reached these harsh and primal times is only bound by the limits of your imagination (though Devan Shell's time machine from the sequel seems a likely cuplrit, maybe it wasn't destroyed after all?). However, each of the worlds has its own backstory to give it some life and atmosphere (also to help me make the levels themselves) - Planet 1: Carrottus These levels take you back to an earlier, prehistoric form of Carrottus where rabbits are yet to evolve into the dominant species that they are destined to become. Here, lush overgrowth covers the planet, hungry beasts lurk in the dark caves and giant eagles patrol the sky. Legends speak of large, ferocious reptilian creatures that roamed in time long forgotten, making a meal out of everything in their paths. Unfortunately for you, this is the era you find yourself trapped in, so make sure that meal doesnt become you. Level 1 is fairly straightforward, because its fairly linear. There is a fire shield hidden near the start, and another point of interest is the hidden and elusive carrot garden. Be careful where you leap, there's lots of thorns. Level 2 is somewhat harder, and is littered with hazards. Avoid falling in the cave, as the pits are covered in thorns. The tunnel systems should be safer than the open spaces in the first area, and can provide a shortcut out of the cave. Though most of the items are in plain view, sometimes it takes is a leap of faith to find what you're looking for. For the latter half of the level, I reccomend taking on enemies one on one or some situations could be overwhelming. Planet 2: Jungrock Deep in the dense greenery of the Carrottus forests there is a portal to an even greener world. This humid and lush jungle is home to a number of birds, insects and predators. Even the caves are full of growth. The oxygen rich atmosphere has accelerated the growth of many species here, particularly bugs, so bring some firepower. The first level should be easy enough to navigate. Those mosquitos can be a pain though so keep the trigger ready. Look down before you fall into areas that you can't readily see. I like to divide the second level into sections based on the height (y axis). There's the upper section, filled with hanging vines, the canopy, caves and the abyss. The upper way is the quickest, but the caves bring more benefits along the way. Both upper and lower extremes are probably the most dangerous, especially because of the hazard of death pits, but they hold the best items. Clearing out the lower paths first would probably be a good idea so not to fall into unknown territory, but be careful not to climb too low. Launchers and RFs are strongly reccomended, the layout and durability of the enemies here is probably too much for a blaster to cope with. Since this is the hardest level to beat so far, i'll offer a few suggestions: 1) There are very many powerups, ammo stashes, and health refills placed throughout the level, but they take some exploration and intuition to find. 2) You cant always immediately see where you are landing, but falling towards items is generally a safe bet. 3) There are way too many pickups and enemies here to clear out 4) The exit is at the furthest right 5) You can take to the skies in this level, and backtrack for some items and powerups. Planet 3: Corrupted Sanctuary Escaping the humid and deadly jungle, you find a monastery situated high on a mountaintop. As you approach nearer, the peaceful and sunny atmosphere becomes slowly enveloped by a gloomy fog. Arriving at the gate of the monastery you notice how decrepit and old it looks, but as you soon find out it is far from abandoned. Time seems to stand still in these ancient halls, only the monastery itself can tell what dark secrets it keeps within its walls. Shadows seem to cling to everything around you, and disturbing and ghastly noises echo out from the dark depths of the catacombs beneath. The first level showcases a glimmer of what is a recurring theme in this pack: multiple routes. However, it is fairly straightforward, and should be simple if you can withstand the barrage of enemies. There's a few minor secrets here and there (mostly near the start) that contain spare ammo and shields. Launchers should be your friend in this level! A good portion of the level involves navigating through cramped crawlspaces so firepower trumps over manueverability. The second level has a fairly different structure, emphasizing multiple routes and more open areas. This level also hits hard, so there are lots of shields scattered about. Depending on the path you take, the save point may or may not be readily visible. If you reach a wooden false floor without finding it then you missed it, backtrack a bit and follow the arrows. Tne bonus gem is hidden in a palace of bones. * I had animated torches made for this tileset (well, copied from disguise's set) but JJ1 ran out of animation memory so I was forced to remove them :/ **The two additional levels added with the 1.2 patch also use the Corrupted Sanctuary tileset, but with some new content and surprises :) Since unlike its sequel Jazz1 does not allow level names into headers, I've included them here so that maps won't be referred by their generic planet names: Into the GardenLEVEL0.000CARROTUS Prowling GroundLEVEL1.000CARROTUS Jungle RockLEVEL0.001JUNGROCK Cloud ForestLEVEL1.001JUNGROCK THE MONASTERYLEVEL0.002CORRUPT SANCTUARY Crypt of RaisLEVEL1.002CORRUPT SANCTUARY Dark Dragon LairLEVEL0.003? I trimmed it down to fit the tile reqs. ` and added some tiles from Damn Nation which I also edited. Thanks for the awesome CS set Wisety =] Giant Bird, Cave Bear, Food Sprites Ripped from an old PC game called Bat Creature Prehistorik 2 (made in 1993). Drake Sprites Ripped from an mmorpg called Maplestory. Spritesheet credited to "Boo". Alien Atmosphere The original mod file sadly did not include an author whom I can credit. Some small modifications were made to allow this track to be compatible. Medioeval Fabio Barzagli. Ditto above. The rest of the sprites are either original content or modifidied by myself. A special thanks goes out to MC Hammer. There are a few people whom without their efforts this pack would not be possible. 1. Big thanks to Epic Games (then known as Epic MegaGames) for developing and releasing the original Jazz Jackrabbit game. Some of my first childhood memories involve getting together with a friend and playing this game. 2. Without the work of Newspaz in creating a level editing program that is versatile and easy to learn, I wouldn't be able to make these levels. 3. I made extensive use of a tool called JJ1MOD, developed by Doubble Dutch, which allowed me to import and customize a lot of features that weren't present in the original game. Link to the file is here: http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/5471/jj1mod-beta/ 4. I had some help with the learning curve of the editor from Violet, who answered a lot of my questions to which I was able to overcome the roadblocks preventing the completion of this game. 5. All the people who betatested and gave me advice on these levels, that helped me fix a lot of bugs and problems with the game. 6. For the Lost Ages 1.2 patch, I used the J1LES and J1E->JCS programs created by Violet, as well as the "official" PSM Converter. Finally, thank you for downloading and supporting this pack! It's not the first custom Jazz Jackrabbit 1 mod and it probably won't be the last, but hopefully it will inspire others to the potential this game has for modding. I've seen some very inspiring things done with the game editor so I look forward to seeing what will be done in the future. ___________________________________________________________________________ _ (X6) Archive Contents ___________________________________________________________________________ _ If this archive file does not contain all the documents mentioned below and necessary to run this mod, you have downloaded a corrupted or modified archive of Lost Ages :( BLOCKS.000 BLOCKS.002 BLOCKS.003 BLOCKS.011 BLOCKS.035 BONUSMAP.000 BONUSMAP.001 BONUSMAP.006 BONUSMAP.011 Installation.txt J1LA-README.txt LEVEL0.000 LEVEL0.001 LEVEL0.002 LEVEL0.003 LEVEL1.000 LEVEL1.001 LEVEL1.002 LEVEL1.003 Lost Ages 1.2 Update Log.txt PLANET.000 PLANET.001 PLANET.002 PLANET.003 ALIENATM.PSM HAMMER.PSM MEDIOEVA.PSM SONG6.PSM SONG11.PSM SONG17.PSM SPRITES.000 SPRITES.001 SPRITES.002 SPRITES.003 -Blackraptor, summer of '11
