JJ1: Orbitus 2 spring event fix Mosquito JJ1 Level N/A Download file

File preview

Pre-warning:

If you have the CD version of Jazz Jackrabbit that on the menu screen is
titled "Jazz Jackrabbit CD" instead of just
plain "Jazz Jackrabbit" you don't need this fix and should NOT use it. If
you have the floppy version you should NOT use this either.
You'll only break the level because those versions don't understand the
level events in this version.

Always make backups of the original files you are replacing.

There are at least two versions of Jazz Jackrabbit that were circulated on
CD.
One of them has the letters "CD" on the game title on the starting menu.
The other one doesn't.

The latter has a bug that makes a part of the level "Orbitus 2" impossible
to get through without cheating.

I think the bug itself doesn't necessarily reside in the mild differences
between the two versions of the Orbitus 2 level but maybe
in the way these two versions of the game handle the level events. For the
problematic part those levels seem to be identical.

Regardless. I can't access the game's source code. If I could, I wouldn't
be qualified enough to make the necessary changes in the code.
So the only option for me was to change the level itself.

The problem is that somehow when you get to the point where you try to
bounce Jazz in the springy walls and floors section the
spring-event above the character gets triggered before you can exit through
the hole on the right side wall sending you back
up where you came from. This doesn't happen with the other version of the
game - the one with "CD" on the game title.

Taking the level from that version of the game doesn't help because it
breaks part of the levels graphics.
So I made this.

This little patch fixes the annoying Orbitus 2 level bug for the Jazz
Jackrabbit CD version that does NOT have "CD" spelled on the title.

I have seen at least two other Orbitus 2 fixes but the way they handled
this problem was a little crude on my opinion so I made my own.
Instead of just putting an obstacle under the upper springs and calling it
a day, I lifted the upper floorspring events one tile
with their corresponding graphics for both jumps. Nothing else is changed
in the level.

It is now possible to pass this particular spot on Orbitus part 2 with and
without slow motion but the level still retains most of the
challenge that I believe the developers originally might have meant this
infuriating little puzzle to have.

On the latter jump you have to bounce yourself from the left side wall
towards the opening and press "down" -button timed just right.

The latter jump is still rather hard without slow motion but I know it can
be done because I played it through that part few times
for testing purposes. All the way with and without slow motion. Without the
patch it was really impossible. This is much easier on the
other version of the game since you can only just keep moving towards the
wall with the opening and get through it without any effort.

For testing purposes I have included a savefile from the level Orbitus 2. I
doublepacked the savefile to prevent any accidents with
careless people overwriting their savegames.

Special thanks to Newspaz for the J1E level editor because this wouldn't
have been possible without this program.
