I enjoyed these vids, especially since I’ve never played Jazz 1 custom levels :).

I think the JJ2 tilesets work better in JJ1. Visually, I mean. With everything zoomed in because of the lower resolution. Years and years ago, someone I met in-game said that JJ2 was developed to work around a 320×200 resolution or something like that.

Too bad everything doesn’t stay the same size independant of resolution.

They were meant for a 320x resolution, yeah, hence why some of the levels (Labrat) have such empty-feeling backgrounds. However, they were also meant for a much taller character sprite than JJ1’s, so it’s not the same feeling.

that’s true, Nick Stadler, the artist, said that himself (pardon for not giving source). this particularly hurts with the Damn background, which, when playing on a 320×240 res, looks absolutely BAD. ASS.

I decided to give JJ2 a try at 320×240. Yeah, I’m noticing some details I haven’t before. Playing on a 32 inch TV doesn’t really work well though. The pixels are huge! Not like with the 15 inch CRT I was using back in the day. :P

I remember reading about some JJ2 developers saying that they’d still play the finished game in 320x even when 640×480 became the standard at some point in development.

My first time playing JJ2, I remember I got shocked at how ‘tiny’ all characters on the screen were compared to JJ1. :P

Yeah, I had the same experience when I first booted up the shareware demo… That, and I was wondering why they made the splash screen with Jazz & Spaz so ugly :P.
