JJ2 Developer bought by Sony

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is acquiring the Dutch games company Guerilla games. Guerilla games used to be called Orange Games, and as a devoted Jazz Jackrabbit fan you will instantly recognize this company as the developer of Jazz Jackrabbit 2.

This probably means that the chances of the release of JJ2’s source code are even smaller than they were before, as Guerilla will most likely be busy with new exciting Sony console-only titles and Sony doesn’t have a history of being friendly to the fans. It also means a new Jazz Jackrabbit title would either be Sony-exclusive or without Arjan Brussee, main programmer of JJ1 and JJ2, as a member of the developement team.

Could it be more possible that JJ2 will be declared abandoned software with Sony taking over Orange Games?

Stijn on 8 Dec 2005 at 16:58

No. Sony is a giant company and giant companies tend to be really conservative about copyright and patants etcetera.

ARGH. That’s all I can think of right now.

I always disliked sony, but now I dislike them even more.

Well, whatever it means to the source code situation.. Guerilla should be congratulated regardless of that. I’m surprised no-one in the comments seems to have done so.

Congratulations and good luck, Guerilla Games.

(also, it seems that hating Sony for buying a company is strange)

Sharks. There goes our chances of getting the JJ2 source code, unless Arjan has it.

Being bought out isn’t something I’d really congratulate a company over. Usually it only happens as a last resort, or the leadership doesn’t care that much about the company.

Also, “acquisiting” isn’t an English word. Maybe you meant “acquiring”.

FQuist on 9 Dec 2005 at 08:05

From the press release at their site they seem to be happy about it, Monolith. Of course, you could say it’s spin, but it does seem to give them more resources to use in game development. I also do not see how being acquired by another company is a terrible thing. It seems to me people are generally quite happy to have their companies be bought by Google, or Yahoo (see Flickr). Those are the ones I have experience with, I don’t see how it’s neccessarily anything different with being bought by Sony.

Odin: I’m not sure how you’ve managed to read that from the newspost. This may make it harder to get the source, but definitely not impossible. Orange Games was not the only entity involved with the development of Jazz 2, wasn’t it? And wether Arjan has the source or someone else seems to not matter at all since it’s about getting the rights to the source, not the source itself.

Exciting new titles?

Hardly, its owned by Sony now. I expect perhaps another Halo clone (the next installment of Killzone) which fails again.

ÄÉæÛÕ on 10 Dec 2005 at 04:27

Blagh, Nintendo didn’t act fast enough.

Hareking on 10 Dec 2005 at 16:03

KillZone wasn’t actually a bad game. My brother played most of the parts from it and he liked it. It’s just that I dislike the overused shooter genre. And if you dislike Sony, okay, but we should congratulate Arjan because his status as game developer grew much bigger because of this. But I still wish a new Jazz game, made by this company or Epic, it doesn’t matter.

Wait, didn’t JJA happen without Guerrila Games at all?
