If you’ve been around in this community since the days of Jazz2City, you may remember the brief but certainly funny “Butt Ugly Level Of The Week” series by stripe. Every week (in fact the original series only lasted two weeks) stripe would throughly analyze the worst level he encountered that week. Ofcourse he provided juicy details and a download link. As said, though, the popular series came to an end in 1999…

…to be revived today. ToxicBunny, also known as AlisterT, decided to post a new issue at his own site. With the recent forwarding of the list servers a lot of players have discovered online play, and this ofcourse lead to a massive amount of BULOTW candidates. Read more about ToxicBunny’s final decision at the BULOTW site: http://www.alister.eu/jazz/bulotw/.

HORRAY

This isn’t very nice. The person who created that level could feel offended, after all, he/she may have put a lot of effort in it. No need to ridicule others’ work, even if you don’t like it yourself.

Jolly Good show.

this is awesome :D

…I still don’t understand where these new people came from. Have they been trying the list server to see if it would work every single day, and then one day it suddenly started working and they were happy?

Lots of people download old video games like jj2. They are somewhat easy to obtain since there are websites that specialize in “abandonware”.

A possibly silly theory of mine is also that (is this even possible? it’s late) some people hosted/joined their local games on their own networks using online play mode instead of tcp/ip mode (or just used the wrong option). It just didn’t use to send these local games to the listserver.

Aliens have invaded earth

These are nice, but yea the authors could be offended.

Blackraptor on 1 May 2006 at 02:55

While I’m seeing a lot of possible humour resulting from this, I know that if I was a levelmaker that was new to the scene I might feel offended to the point where I would stop making levels altogether if I saw one of my works being credited as the ugliest level of the week (and this could potentially kill off future talent..)

Violet CLM on 1 May 2006 at 04:28

Quist: Oh, that would make sense. Playing using IP addresses, and then one day boom, there’s a list!

FireSworD on 1 May 2006 at 06:17

Not to sound blunt, but there are some people who prefer this game not to prosper and just be remembered for its past, Blackraptor.

Butt Ugly! Nice to see that thing again!

I was just thinking about this the other day, actually. ++Alister for restarting it.

Not to sound mean, but most everyone starts off making bad levels. If someone can’t handle being criticized for their work publically, maybe they should not have released it to the public. Perhaps they don’t know any better, but really, it is not Alister’s fault for how someone reacts to this. The levelmakers can either be offended or they can learn from it and improve.

There are a lot of Swedish TSF players on now too…I constantly see ‘Superfiskens spel’ on, but you wouldn’t know what it means. We must tell them about J2O and encourage them to make and upload their own levels to feed Alister with (and also so they won’t just play in Battle 1 ;-P).

Grytolle on 1 May 2006 at 20:25

I WOULD KNOW WHAT THE SUPERFISH’S GAME MEANS WR ;(((

American on 1 May 2006 at 22:51

I was just thinking about this the other day, too. Actually, it’s because I saw this level.

Go Alister.

DoubleGJ on 4 May 2006 at 13:47

What Spaztic said. If someone stops making levels just because of a more humorous critique, they aren’t really going to do much progress, since criticising is the basic part of evolving the skill. Without it the creator is stuck at the same level of prgression.

jam on 5 May 2006 at 19:49

Finally, somewhere where my levels belong! =D

stripe on 30 May 2006 at 21:38

(what cooba said, basically)
