I have put out an initial test release of MLLE, an executable level editor that I have been developing as an alternative to JCS. You can find a download link, the list of still-unimplemented features, and what kind of errors I would like people to watch out for at this forum post. Please report errors and other feedback here or in the linked thread.

An advanced level editor? Did you also make an automatical map generator?
(like the ones used in Age of Empires and SimCity 2000, that is)
If not, please include it.

It’s been a long time since I played either of those games, so I’m not sure exactly what you mean. If you’re talking about automatic layout generation, that’s pretty unlikely, since it would require an immense quantity of logic and level design principles and I’m hardly the best (multiplayer) level designer anyway. If you’re talking about making it easier to make properly-bordered walls and such, currently that’s only supported for rectangles, but a more intricate system is planned later down the line.
