The Bolly Boss was one of the latest endbosses to be implemented into JJ2. He was most likely added after the programming team decided to use a different form of compression for the tileset/level formats, as he didn’t appear in the beta versions using .lev level/tileset format (v1.00g and h) and he did in version v1.10o, which used .j2* formats. Bolly appears in Hare Scare, the last level of the Flashback episode.
The Bolly Boss takes shape of a pair of Sparks in a hovering machine similar to the Eggmobile from the Sonic series. Some people claim that it’s a single eye instead of Sparks (and thus some of them call it “Giant Eye”), but opinions vary. Its sprite is actually composed of six individual animation references (the eyes, the machine, the rotating orange launcher, the missiles, the spiked chain and the crosshair), which leads to a few bugs:
The boss targets the player’s position and shoots purple missiles at him or her, and also swings a (destructable) spike chain towards the player’s direction. To defeat it, the player must damage its upper part – the eyes.
Unlike most of the bosses, Bolly doesn’t have an EndText parameter, and by default it will display text string #0 when killed. However, this can be easily changed by putting the parameter manually into JCS.ini. Putting |EndText:4
will make the the boss work properly.
