The Norm Turtle is an enemy from Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It also is an JCS Event.
The Norm Turtle (presumably short for “Normal Turtle”) is an enemy very similar to the Turtle Goon enemies of Jazz Jackrabbit 1. As a matter of fact, the Norm Turtle uses the exact same sprite as the Turtle Goons, only with added shading. They aren’t much more formidable than their predecessors, either; they amble along the platform they’ve been placed on at a slow pace, pausing occasionally to yawn or smack their lips. They plod along in one direction until reaching an edge, wall, or slope, then turn around and continue in the opposite direction. They have one feeble attack; occasionally, whether the player is in range or not, the Norm Turtle will take a snap at the area in front of him, extending his attack range for a moment. This is quite useless since the turtle’s neck is far shorter than the range of all weapons available for the player (except TNT, which has 0 range, but a blast radius which will kill the turtle anyway).
Although often seen as the typical ‘dumb baddie’, the norm turtle will occasionally show a hint of artificial intelligence and duck (i.e. creep into its shell) when a bullet heads towards it. Its reflexes are quite fast when doing this bullet dodge trick, but it also very quickly emerges from its shell again, so firing two or three shots in a row should definitely kill it. An even more cunning trick is its rare ‘shell ambush’. Sometimes, the turtle will hide in its shell and then not come out (this happens only after it has performed a bullet dodge). If the player chooses to get near the seemingly harmless shell, the turtle pops back out again and attacks the player. This can be dealt with by not getting fooled and just shoot the helpless shell from a distance. (Note that ‘live’ shells face the right way up, while ‘dead’ shells are upside-down).
If the player chooses to dispatch the Norm Turtle by buttstomping, uppercutting, using TNT or side-kicking, the Norm Turtle will simply die and its shell will be destroyed along with it. If shot by
the Blaster, Bouncer, Seeker, RF Missile, Pepper Spray, Toaster, or Electro Blaster, the turtle will be killed, but the shell will remain. The shell itself essentially becomes a Turtle Shell event and can be interacted with in the same manner as the Turtle Shell event. (Note that you can literally burn the turtle shell by shooting it once or twice, again, with the toaster or electro blaster). The dragon enemy can also burn the turtle shell because it breathes fire very similar to the player’s toaster weapon.
In the official levels of Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Norm Turtles can be found in the Castle, Labrat, Diamondus, and Easter levels. A Christmas version of the Norm Turtle (with Christmas bulbs and decorations on the shell, as well as a Santa hat on its head) can also be found spreading holiday cheer in the Holiday Hare 98 levels.
