The game is over whenever Jazz, Spaz or Lori are killed during gameplay when the number of lives they have is 0. In single player mode, the player is taken to a ‘Game Over’ screen when all lives have run out. He has the choice of whether to continue or quit the game by going either right or left. On the right side is a grass field with a mushroom house with a sign reading “Stud”, and a smiling sun looking down on the landscape, and on the left side is an empty grave in front of a tombstone marked ‘Loser’ in a dark, lonely cemetery surrounded by dead trees.
If the player wishes to continue, he/she will regain 3 lives of his/her character, but all points, pickups, power-ups, coins and gems collected will be taken and the player will start from the beginning of the level where he/she was the last time. If the player wishes to quit, the highscore screen will show up, where the player can type in his name if sufficient score has been gained, and then the main menu appears.
In splitscreen coop mode, the player will remain in a permanent game over state until either the other player wins the game, or dies as well (if the latter situation happens, the game must be restarted manually from the in-game menu since it will not revert from its game over state by itself).
